Late Night Rant: Champs, Summer and Turkey Dubstep

Hey, folks! Hope everyone’s doing well. Here’s what’s on tap for tonight:

1. 2013 NBA Champions

2013 champsThe Miami Heat defeated the San Antonio Spurs last Thursday to repeat as NBA champions! LeBron James (my favourite player of all time) is now a two time world champion, as is Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade is now a three time champion. Pretty impressive stuff.

I am elated to see my team come out on top and LBJ collect his second ring. It was no easy task though; even though the Spurs looked gassed from merely one half of basketball, they managed to stick with the Heat all the way until the end of the fourth quarter. That’s when Tim Duncan missed one of the biggest shots (and put-back attempt) of his life with a much smaller Shane Battier guarding him tightly. Then, immediately after the miss, LeBron (the eventual Finals MVP) came up huge with a foul line jumper that put Miami back up by four and the rest is history.

Personally, I’m buying myself a Ray Allen jersey this year for the unreal (and season-saving) three he hit at the end of regulation in Game 6. This postseason was wild and mind-boggling and a great way to kick off summer. Speaking of which…

2. Summer

Summer-Wallpaper-3It’s summer! Where do we begin? (See below) I can’t believe it’s already the official start of summer! I know I’ve been finished my first year of university since the end of April, but it still feels like this is the true beginning. Yesterday was the first actual day of summer and now all of the high school kids are in the process of completing their final exams while the tourists are starting to pour in like a noisy, unclean bunch of mindless puppies (I just love tourists).

But other than that, it’s getting warmer out and the beaches are starting to fill up with people. The scent of BBQ’s cooking steaks is in the air and the unfathomably pleasing sensation of evening summer air is omnipotent.

Can’t wait to see what this summer brings. Hit me up, maybe we’ll go for an ice cream cone.

3. Turkey Dubstep

I find this video absolutely hilarious. (See below) It has to be one of the most fun things I’ve ever watched and if you’re a fan of dubstep or turkeys, then you’ve just gotta check this out. You’d think the combination just wouldn’t flow very well together but in fact it’s the polar opposite.

I’ve gotta get me a turkey like that…

Well, that’s all for tonight. Stay frosty.

NBA Talk: May 12

You heard right, the Warriors are giving the Spurs a challenge.
You heard right, the Warriors are giving the Spurs a challenge.

What happened today: Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors managed to knock off the San Antonio Spurs at Oracle Arena to knot the series up at 2-2. The game had to go to overtime before ending, but it was worth a watch. There was a lot of sloppy play but some exciting ones as well. Both of these teams looked a little gassed and both star point guards of the Warriors and Spurs were dealing with injuries. Curry was playing through a sprained ankle and Tony Parker went on with a calf bruise. This series has been insanely interesting to watch and looks to be one that goes all the way to a Game 7.

Who showed up big: Harrison Barnes of the Warriors came up big in this afternoon’s game with 26 points and 10 boards. If you’ve forgotten by this point, he is still a rookie. And a damn good one at that. The kid is fearless and explosive, willing to take any clutch shot or attempt a dunk over anyone. He struggled early on in the game today and didn’t shoot a very high percentage, but that didn’t stop him from taking the shots he should’ve been and he made a lot of big ones near the end of the game, along with backup point guard, Jarrett Jack.

Who’s surprising me right now: The Memphis Grizzlies. These guys really do grind out every single game and it’s showing against the reeling Thunder. The Grizz lead that series 2-1 at the moment with a chance to go up 3-1 at home next game before heading back to OKC. The reigning defensive player of the year, Marc Gasol, has been just fantastic in this series as has Tony Allen. The tough, physical defense of the Grizz is doing one heck of a number on the Thunder, who are without All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook and are looking for more scoring options than just Kevin Durant. The Grizz have handled business so far so there’s no reason to think they can’t or won’t win this series. Even without Westbrook, losing in the second round would be a massive failure for OKC and an upset that I can’t honestly say I saw coming.

Best thing about today’s games: Steph Curry getting the MVP chant when he went to the line in Oracle Arena. These playoffs have made everyone realize, if they didn’t before, that Curry is one of the greatest pure shooters to ever play the game of basketball. Every single time he rises up for a shot, Warriors fans cheer and opponents hide their eyes because it just looks like it’s going to fall. Curry’s also adept at creating his own shot, something that’s hard to do in today’s game. He can shoot while being guarded by anyone, anywhere. He showed off his in-the-gym-range this season when he lit up the Garden for 54 points. He won’t win any real MVP awards, but this kid can play.

What I’m looking forward to for tomorrow: Two things. How the Knicks make use of Stoudemire being back in the lineup. Does he make the Knicks a better or worse team and how rusty is he now? I’m ready to see Bosh take it to Boozer again in Game 4, just like he’s been doing all series. Ever since Boozer made that “Two and Half Men” comment two post-seasons ago, Bosh hasn’t held back on asserting dominance over the opposing big man.

Late Night Rant: New band, NBA and Gilbert Gottfried

So I’m doing another one of these. Here’s what’s on the agenda:

1. Imagine Dragons

imagine dragonsThese guys are a band I just came across today when my roommate showed me their music. I must say, it has taken me aback with how much I like it. It’s the kind of stuff where you think you like it the first time you hear it, but you want to hear it again a few more times just to make sure. After I heard the original song that got me, Radioactive, I sought out more of their tunes and found that I enjoyed almost all of them; which is weird for me. I don’t know anything about this band at all except that they’re good and you should check them out if you’re looking for someone new to listen to or give a chance.

Their music is also the kind that, if you’re like me, brings up a lot of things to think about. Just the sound and the way the lyrics are sung strikes something within me that makes me smile and delve into deeper thought. It’s one of those things that’s hard to explain, so you just kind of have to listen to it, y’know?

2. Miami Heat VS Milwaukee Bucks

heat vs bucksGame 2 was played tonight at the American Airlines Arena and the Bucks sure showed up to play. It’s strange though, it was much the opposite type of game that they played in the previous one. Before, they leaned heavily on Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis to provide scoring. Tonight, not so much. Instead, their entire team got involved except those two. It gave the Heat a bit of a run for their money for most of the game until they got into the fourth quarter, where the Heat spouted off a 12-0 run in just over two minutes.

As for the Heat, they took the game and now lead the series 2-0. But they still haven’t played great in either of the games they’ve played. They have looked strong at points, but never for the entire game. I’m hoping that part of it is the fact that they’re playing the Bucks, but who knows? As the series shifts to Milwaukee, perhaps they’ll play with a bit more intensity for more of the game.

Right now though, it’s looking like this series really will end in a sweep. Sorry Bucks, just bad luck.

3. Gilbert Gottfried

gilbert-gottfriedOne of my roommates (a different one than the one who introduced me to Imagine Dragons) showed me this absolutely hilarious video tonight that is just Gilbert Gottfried reading from the novel 50 Shades of Grey. It is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Mixing his voice with the mature subject matter of the book is simply hysterical. If you don’t laugh at stuff like this, then you’re not human. I suppose it would be even more funny if you’ve actually read the book (I haven’t and never will), but nonetheless it’s the best video I’ve seen on the internet in a long while. The dude’s just got a classic voice.

Click here if you wanna see the video. But be warned, the book he’s reading from contains explicit content… Duh.

Well, that’s it for tonight. Hope you guys enjoyed this! I’ll be doing more of these in the future for sure.

Stay frosty.
